As outlined in our post on the\u00a0<\/span>value of Agile in healthcare<\/span>, we take pride in understanding and responding to the unique needs of this industry\u2013from new regulations to rapidly changing safety protocols to complex legacy systems.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition to\u00a0directly\u00a0supporting our partners in\u00a0the\u00a0health\u00a0and wellness space, we were recently tapped by Microsoft to\u00a0join\u00a0for\u00a0the inaugural\u00a0Tech\u00a0Serum\u00a0event,\u00a0a one-weekend healthcare hackathon.\u00a0Tech\u00a0Serum\u00a0brought together\u00a0teams of medical experts, pharmaceutical\u00a0marketing\u00a0professionals, and developers like\u00a0myself\u00a0to imagine solutions.\u00a0My team\u2019s industry guests were\u00a0<\/span>Dr. Juliet Wolford<\/span><\/a>, a\u00a0gynecologic\u00a0oncologist at the University of Cincinnati, and Dr. Alex So,\u00a0a CS PhD and\u00a0Associate Director at Merck Group who logged in from Shanghai.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Read on to learn how I was able to leverage my experience designing software solutions for healthcare, 3Cloud\u2019s standard for successful projects (always on time and done right the first time), and the expertise of Drs. Wolford and So to bring home an award at <\/span>Tech Serum 2021<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Problem:\u00a0Fake Doctors. Real Potential.<\/h2>\n

As is often the case with hackathons, our team started with one idea Friday afternoon that got\u00a0scrapped\u00a0by Saturday morning. At that point, Dr. Wolford had another\u00a0idea, inspired by\u00a0how she communicates with other doctors within her specialty in a Facebook group.\u00a0I come from a family of doctors and nurses, and they all have similar networks they turn to\u00a0for special cases and\u00a0when they need a\u00a0<\/span>second opinion<\/span><\/i>\u00a0(spoiler: this became the name of our app).\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Communication between specialists is great, because it can expedite disease diagnosis. However,\u00a0we identified this as an area to improve. Facebook is full of fake profiles and fringe doctors.\u00a0Unless you\u00a0actually know\u00a0the\u00a0person\u00a0you\u2019re asking,\u00a0you can\u2019t even verify they\u2019re a licensed medical doctor. Plus, when you answer questions from others under your name, you\u2019re opening yourself up to legal repercussions if your medical advice causes harm.<\/span><\/p>\n

Our Solution: Second Opinion<\/h2>\n

Enter Second Opinion\u2122,\u00a0the\u00a0app that empowers doctors to talk to other verified doctors, anonymously.\u00a0In our concept, the registration process uses\u00a0<\/span>Doximity<\/span>\u00a0or other similar API to verify\u00a0a user\u00a0at signup. From there,\u00a0an\u00a0Office of\u00a0Inspector\u00a0General check\u00a0is run to\u00a0ensure they\u2019re not currently being sued\u00a0and don\u2019t\u00a0have any\u00a0red flags in their history.\u00a0Next, the app\u00a0generates their\u00a0username\u00a0and\u00a0a\u00a0profile that\u00a0displays their specialty,\u00a0with an\u00a0indication of\u00a0where they\u2019re\u00a0at\u00a0in their career.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The unique selling proposition of the app is this stringent verification process. From there, the app works like Twitter, Reddit, or Facebook with feeds, hashtags, and notifications.\u00a0It brings together the vetting power of\u00a0Doximity, the professionalism of LinkedIn, the anonymity of Blind, and more.\u00a0AI and natural language processing (NLP) can be\u00a0layered\u00a0in to help categorize\u00a0the questions and enforce HIPAA and protected healthcare info moderation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Our team felt good about our\u00a0doctor-to-doctor\u00a0Tech Serum\u00a0solution\u00a0and our ability to arrive at it quickly.\u00a0\u201cAs I was brainstorming ideas, the developer was putting together code,\u201d Dr. Wolford reflected\u00a0to\u00a0<\/span>The\u00a0Whyse<\/span><\/a>. \u201cI was so surprised with how quickly he was able to put something together. As a clinician, I don\u2019t often get to see the technical side and it was interesting to see it come together so quickly by people who are invested in an idea.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The true test, of course, came when we pitched Second Opinion\u2122\u00a0to the judges\u2013a\u00a0panel\u00a0made up of representatives from\u00a0Truth Serum NTWK\u2122, MJH Life Sciences\u2122, Microsoft, and renowned independent healthcare entrepreneurs and leaders.\u00a0They awarded us with a certificate of excellence for \u2018Most Creative\u2019.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
