Last year, we wrote a blog post that <a href=\"\/blog\/introducing-power-bi-report-server\" rel=\" noopener\">introduced<\/a> the Power BI Report Server. Our aim with this recap is to put those questions to bed by illustrating key points.<\/p>\n<h3>WHAT IS POWER BI REPORT SERVER?<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/3cloudsolutions.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/SSRS-and-Power-BI-1.png\" alt=\"SSRS and Power BI Report Server \" width=\"809\" height=\"202\" \/><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><em><span style=\"text-align: center; background-color: transparent;\">Figure 1 &#8211; SSRS + Power BI Reports = Power BI Report Server!<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>Power BI Report Server is an <\/em><strong>on-premises<\/strong><em> product based on the <\/em><strong>SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) framework<\/strong><em> which allows hosting, sharing, and collaborating on <\/em><strong>Power BI Reports,<\/strong><em> all behind your organization\u2019s firewall<\/em>. The key words in that previous sentence are \u201con-premises\u201d, \u201cSSRS framework\u201d and \u201cPower BI Reports\u201d. Let\u2019s take a closer look at each of those.<\/p>\n<h3>ON-PREMISES<\/h3>\n<p>Unlike the Power BI Service, which is a cloud-based analytics platform hosted by Microsoft, or Power BI Premium, which is simply dedicated cloud capacity within the Power BI Service, Power BI Report Server is a product that is installed and configured on a dedicated on-premises server.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/3cloudsolutions.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Power-BI-Report-Server-1.png\" alt=\"Power BI Report Server\" width=\"470\" height=\"342\" \/><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><em><span style=\"background-color: transparent;\">Figure 2 &#8211; Power BI Report Server is 100% &#8220;in-house&#8221; vs. Power BI Service, which is hosted by Microsoft.<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<h3>SSRS FRAMEWORK<\/h3>\n<p>As illustrated above, Power BI Report Server is also built atop the SSRS framework, thus allowing you to deploy SSRS reporting assets such as paginated reports, mobile reports, KPIs, and Excel workbooks to your Power BI Report Server. Additionally, this means you can easily <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/en-us\/power-bi\/report-server\/migrate-report-server\">migrate an existing SSRS implementation<\/a> to Power BI Report Server.<\/p>\n<h3>POWER BI REPORTS<\/h3>\n<p>In terms of Power BI assets, only Power BI Reports can be deployed to the Power BI Report Server. Power BI assets and functionality such as Dashboards and Q&amp;A are only available in the Power BI Service.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"width: 757px; display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/3cloudsolutions.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/PBIRS-Does-not-Include-1.png\" alt=\"What Power BI Report Server Does Not Include \" width=\"757\" \/><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><em><span style=\"background-color: transparent;\">Figure 3 &#8211; Power BI Report Server only includes Power BI Reports.<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<h3>YEAH, THAT\u2019S GREAT, BUT HOW DO WE PURCHASE POWER BI REPORT SERVER?<\/h3>\n<p>Unfortunately, Power BI Report Server cannot be purchased directly as a standalone product. There are currently only two ways to acquire Power BI Report Server. The Microsoft preferred way is via purchasing Power BI Premium capacity within the Power BI Service. This will give you the ability to install and configure an on-premises Power BI Report Server to compliment your cloud premium capacity. Acquiring Power BI Report Server via this method sets that stage for a hybrid Power BI implementation, which is a topic we will discuss further in a subsequent blog post.<\/p>\n<h3>WE HAVE NO INTEREST IN THE CLOUD. WHAT\u2019S THE OTHER WAY TO ACQUIRE POWER BI REPORT SERVER?<\/h3>\n<p>The other way to acquire Power BI Report Server is by purchasing SQL Server Enterprise edition with active Software Assurance (SA). If you already have SQL Server Enterprise and active SA, you can <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/en-us\/power-bi\/report-server\/find-product-key\">obtain your license key<\/a> from the Microsoft Volume Licensing Service Center (VLSC).<\/p>\n<p>For more information on SQL Server licensing or Software Assurance benefits, check out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/sql-server\/sql-server-2017-pricing\">Microsoft\u2019s SQL Server licensing guide and datasheet<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>NOTE:<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0<em>An important purchasing footnote is that although it is an on-premises report server, you must still purchase\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/en-us\/power-bi\/service-admin-purchasing-power-bi-pro\">Power BI Pro licenses<\/a>\u00a0for any report authors that will be\u00a0<u>publishing<\/u>\u00a0Power BI reports to your\u00a0<u>production server(s)<\/u>.\u00a0Therefore, if you have ten report authors, but only two individuals handle publishing to Production, then only two Power BI Pro licenses are required. You may think of it as an \u201cadd on\u201d to purchasing Premium capacity. Obtaining Power BI Report Server via this method is optimal for those organizations that are looking for a hybrid (both cloud and on-premises) BI architecture.<\/td>\n<td style=\"width: 400px; vertical-align: middle;\"><strong>Power BI Report Server<\/strong> is included as part of your purchase of <strong>SQL Server Enterprise<\/strong> with <strong>active Software Assurance (SA)<\/strong>. This is currently the ONLY way on-premises customers can obtain Power BI Report Server. Consider this another perk if you choose to purchase SQL Server Enterprise edition over Standard edition.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n<h2>A MODERN ON-PREMISES BI SOLUTION<\/h2>\n<h2><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; width: 824px;\" src=\"https:\/\/3cloudsolutions.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Capture.png\" alt=\"How to Acquire Power BI Report Server\" width=\"824\" \/><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><em>Figure 6 \u2013 The remainder of this post will focus on acquiring Power BI Report Server via SQL Server Enterprise with active SA.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The remainder of this post will focus on organizations that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Want, or need, their BI solution 100% on-premises<\/li>\n<li>May have an existing investment in Microsoft BI products such as SSRS, Mobile Reports, and PerformancePoint, but want to see how Power BI fits in<\/li>\n<li>May have an existing investment in other vendor BI products such as MicroStrategy, OBIEE, BusinessObjects, Tableau, Qlik, etc., but leverage the SQL Server suite in their back-end architecture<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t currently have any investment in Microsoft data and analytics, but are \u201ckicking the tires\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>POWER BI COMPLEMENTS SSRS<\/h3>\n<p>SSRS is a mature BI product that has been in use for well over a decade now. However, the main gripes against SSRS are that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It\u2019s more static than interactive<\/li>\n<li>Report development is not drag-and-drop, therefore development time can be lengthy<\/li>\n<li>Report development typically involves an understanding of various querying languages such as SQL, DAX, and MDX<\/li>\n<li>Report development is typically the responsibility of IT and not consumers of the report<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>NOTE: We have yet to see an organization use Report Builder to enable their power users to build their own paginated reports. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>The beauty of Power BI is that it serves as the answer to all those SSRS gripes, and much more. Power BI reports are highly interactive by default. For example, you can have visuals cross-filter one another by simply clicking on a data point. Power BI Desktop provides an intuitive drag-and-drop interface. Power BI report development can fall to the hands of report consumers. This can free up IT resources to build and maintain corporate BI data sources such as SSAS tabular models or multidimensional cubes.<\/p>\n<p>We have had numerous customers ask: \u201cWhich product should we use then? SSRS or Power BI?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Our response is always, \u201cWhy not both?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If you own Power BI Report Server, why not leverage both? In general, SSRS is a great product to use when you want to produce \u201cshow me the numbers\u201d reports. The SQL Server suite provides a mature set of technologies that cover areas from ETL, MDM, data quality, data warehousing, semantic modeling, and reporting. Power BI Report Server is the cherry on top of it all. What had always been lacking in the on-premises suite was a product that could allow organizations to quickly and easily visualize their data.<\/p>\n<p>Lastly, if you\u2019re already leveraging SQL Server components as part of your back-end infrastructure, but use a different vendor product for reporting, Power BI Report Server serves an inexpensive alternative. We\u2019ve worked with customers that had all Microsoft back-end components (SQL Server, SSIS, SSAS, MDS), but used products from vendors such as MicroStrategy, Tableau, and Qlik for their presentation needs. Often, their reasoning for not using Microsoft for their reporting needs was due to a lack of a self-service visualization product.
