Rather than racing to keep up, businesses should take a step back, devise a clear vision, road map and strategy.\u00a0 The first step in that strategy should be making sure the right team is behind the effort.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong>Assembling an All-star\u00a0Team<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Look to the world of sports for clues in drafting a winning Business Intelligence team.\u00a0 A functional football team can\u2019t be built with three top quarterbacks and no good running backs.\u00a0 BI teams also must be structured with balance.\u00a0 An ideal BI team combines various technical talents and skill sets.\u00a0 Having a team of three highly skilled senior database developers may seem like a good idea on paper, but several unintended consequences can arise.<\/p>\n<p>The potential for power struggles over how things should be coded is one unintended consequence of stacking a BI group with senior-level skills.\u00a0 Senior developers have adopted patterns and techniques that may clash with those of their fellow\u00a0senior counterparts.<\/p>\n<p>An effective teambuilding approach is to stagger ability, pairing a senior and one or two junior to mid-level developers.\u00a0 This allows the senior to set direction and focus on complex issues while the junior handles more routine tasks. \u00a0Not only is this cost effective, but it also provides a healthier team balance and growth opportunity for the junior roles.<\/p>\n<p>Stacking a team with senior developers can also ultimately lead to high employee turnover.\u00a0 This results in lost productivity. Even more damaging\u00a0may be\u00a0the loss of domain knowledge specific to a company.\u00a0 This intangible asset often goes unrecognized until it is too late and the individual has already left the building.<\/p>\n<p>While staggering ability, it is also a good idea to stagger skill sets.\u00a0 Business Intelligence has become very dynamic, demanding both database and programming ability.\u00a0 Having a mix of team members who can \u2018throw\u2019 and \u2018catch\u2019 the ball is paramount.<\/p>\n<p>An important goal in building a team is finding people that work well together.\u00a0 The old adage, \u201cThere is no \u2018I\u2019 in \u2018TEAM\u2019\u201d comes to mind.\u00a0 In other words, personality and the individual\u2019s ability to collaborate with others often trumps his or her ability to perform a technical task.\u00a0 Technical skills can always be learned over time but behavior is hard to change.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Managing the Effort<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Once the team is in place, the next step is to ensure it is properly managed.\u00a0 Having a strong manager at the helm is vital to high performance and team success.\u00a0 This individual acts as a liaison between the team and the rest of the company, hence needs to be carefully chosen. \u00a0A good BI manager must embrace both hard skills to work with the team and soft skills to work with management across the company.\u00a0 Being able to code brings instant credibility and respect among the team, while being business savvy is just as important.<\/p>\n<p>Wayne Eckerson, former director of research at <a href=\"https:\/\/tdwi.org\/Home.aspx\">The Data Warehousing Institute<\/a>, calls those leaders who can straddle the divide between business and IT \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/tdwi.org\/articles\/2010\/11\/01\/seven-strategies-for-creating-high-performance-bi-teams.aspx\">purple people<\/a>\u201d because they \u201care neither blue (i.e., business) nor red (i.e., IT), but a combination of both.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes the strongest Business Intelligence managers can be found within an existing team.
